I have been a governor at Benfield since 2004 and Chair for four years. I joined the governing body as a Parent Governor after choosing Benfield School for my son in 2002. He thrived at Benfield, where staff supported him to achieve all that he could. Vice Chair Alison Cockburn also has children at Benfield School.
The governing body consists of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds, who work strategically with Mr Walker and the Senior Leadership Team to steer the direction of the school. We also have an important duty to offer challenge and support to the staff.
I am very fortunate to lead a strong and very experienced governing body with a range of complementary skills who are committed to the raising of standards and achievement of best outcomes for Benfield students. Governors visit regularly, participating in Learning Walks and work scrutiny to enable us to monitor progress and develop a comprehensive knowledge of the school, its staff and students.
The governing body also have a role to support and represent parents and carers. There are two elected Parent Governors: Andrew Smith and Alison Cockburn, both they and myself can be contacted via Lilian Reeson who is Clerk to the governing body. There are always governors present at school events, including Parents Evenings, Open Evenings, Performances etc, where we enjoy the opportunity of meeting students, staff, parents and carers, please feel free to approach us with your views or questions.
Benfield Governors have been very closely involved in the creation of the Newcastle East mixed multi Academy Trust (NEAT). We believe this is a very exciting opportunity for Benfield and the four primary schools, Walkergate, Central Walker, Tyneview and Welbeck, to continue to raise standards and outcomes for East End students.
